Athaan

Athaan - أَذَان

“Athaan” in Arabic means announcement; in Islam it means announcing that the time for prayer has come.

Important points about Athaan:

  • The Athaan is announced five times a day before each prayer.
  • The Athaan testifies to Allaah’s oneness and denies all partners associated to Him. It also affirms the prophethood of Muhammad () and highlights the importance of prayer. These are all characteristics of what’s needed to be a Muslim.

  • This is repeated four times.
  • We repeat each line after the mu’aththin.
  • This reminds people that Allah is greater and more important than whatever they are doing.

  • This is the first part of the shahadah (testimony of faith).
  • After each time the muadhdhin recites it, we repeat after him.

  • This is the second part of the shahaadah (testimony of faith)
  • After each time the muaththin recites it, we repeat after him

    • After each time the mu’aththin says this, instead of repeating we reply with:

 لَا حَولا وَلا قُوَّةَ إلَّا بِاللَّه

(There is no power or might except with Allah)

    • After each time the mu’aththin says this, instead of repeating we reply with:

 لَا حَولا وَلا قُوَّةَ إلَّا بِاللَّه

(There is no power or might except with Allah)

    • Prayer leads to success in this life and the next.
    • Again, after each time the mu’aththin says this, instead of repeating we reply with:

لَا حَولا وَلا قُوَّةَ إلَّا بِاللَّه

(There is no power or might except with Allah)

This means “prayer is better than sleep”

We reply, after each time, by saying:

صَدَقْتَ وَبَرِرْتَ

(You have spoken the truth and acted piously)

Du’aa after the Athaan

Allaahumma RaB-Ba HaaThiHiD-Da’WaTiT-TaaM-MaTi WaS-SaLaaTiL-Qaa.iMah, .aaTi MuHaM-MaDaNiL-WaSeeLaaTa WaL-FaDheeLah, WaB 'aTH-Hu MaQaaMaM-MaH-MooDaNiL-LaThee Wa’aD-TaH

O Allah! Lord of this perfect call and this established prayer, grant Muhammad Al-WaSeelah (a high and special place in Jannah) and Al-FaDheeLah (a rank above the rest of creation) and raise him to a praised platform which you have promised him.

The importance of this Du'aa

Jabir ibn Abdullah narrates that the messenger of Allah () said, whoever recites the following when he hears the call (to prayer, i.e. after the Adhan) then my intercession for him will be permitted on the Day of Resurrection.
